Our words can lift someone up or tear someone down. Our words spoken to another can carry an impact on that person for years. What is said can never be taken back!
When I was a kid, I dreamed of playing professional baseball. People would say to me, “you are never going to make the big leagues, no one from our town has ever done that.” My father would say when words were spoken like this to derail my dream; “son, don’t pay them attention, you have what it takes.
Keep working hard and I believe you can do it.” When I was 18 years old, the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted me to play professional baseball for their organization. When the people heard that I had been drafted by the Dodgers, they would say; “we knew you were going to do it!”
I learned from this experience that there will be Dream Robbers in life all along the way. Make sure to focus on the people who lift you up instead of the ones who, most times unintentionally, say words to steal your dream and focus.
My mother always said, son if you cannot say something good about someone or to someone; just don’t say anything. Proverbs 21:23 says it this way: “He who guards his mouth and his tongue keep himself from calamity.” And Proverbs 12: 18 “reckless words pierce like a sword but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
My advice is to sincerely say something positive to someone each day. In a genuine way, I like your shirt, that was so kind of you, thank you for always being so positive, you look sharp today and so on. It will make you feel better but will also make another person's day as well. The right word spoken at the right time can be a game-changer.
